A Place to Reflect

Hi, I’m Vatche! I’m a software engineer, husband and father.

I decided to start this blog as a place to reflect. I don’t consider myself an expert in anything, and as such, I have a lot to learn.

I have plenty of ambition. I want to be great at what I do. I want to make enough money to buy a house for my family. I want to have enough free time to enjoy hobbies, spend quality time with my wife and son, and travel. I want to write a book.

I can only accomplish these things if I become a better engineer and a better person, and that requires consistency over a period of time.

You can think of this blog as the lake by the woods I come to when I need to block out distractions and put things into perspective. Am I on track with my goals? What are my weaknesses? Where can I improve? What do I need to cut out of my life and stop worrying about?

As I go through the journey of bettering of myself, I’ll document what I learn here and the mistakes I make along the way. I hope you find value in what I have to share.

As this is a technical blog, I’ll focus initially on topics relating to writing software and having a career as a software engineer. Whether you’re learning to write code for the first time or you’re an experienced engineer looking to improve in a specific area, I think you can find something that interests you here.

Additionally, I’ll touch on more general topics like how to make time for self-improvement even when you feel too busy, how to get to the next level without resenting where you are now, and how to balance thinking long-term with being in the moment.

I want to mention that I can’t predict the exact direction I’ll take this blog over the next few years–and that’s where you come in. Your opinion matters to me and it will impact what this blog will become over time. Please share your thoughts in the comments at the end of each post and I’ll do my best to take your feedback into consideration.

The next post will be the first in a series where I solve the problems from the book Grokking Algorithms in Clojure. Other posts on the way include product reviews, book summaries, and thoughts on how to live better.

Let’s start this journey.
